The clock is ticking down of the release for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. The Warrior Talent Trees are undergoing many changes. Each Talent Tree--Arms, Fury, and Protection-- are having their talents adjusted. Perhaps the most improved Talent Tree is the Protection Talent Tree, making the beloved ¡°Tank¡° an even better tank than before.
Protection Talent Tree One
- Improved Bloodrage--Now increases rage produced by 25% instead of 3. Two ranks to 50%. Now Bloodrage scales with your level, which maintains its relevance in higher levels.
- Shield Specialization--Moved to Tier One. An important skill for anyone who wants to be hit less. Moving it to Tier One makes it easier to tank at lower levels.
- Improved Thunderclap--Moved to Protection Tree. Now increases damage by 10% and slows attacks by 4%. Three ranks to 30% and 10%.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Two
- Incite--Increases the critical hit chance of your Heroic Strike, Thunderclap, and Cleave by 5%. Three ranks to 15%. Since these are the primary damage dealers for a Tank, this is not a bad Talent when you are leveling. .
- Anticipation--Moved to Tier Two. Now increases your dodge rating by 1%. Five ranks to 5%. Being able to Dodge is as important as being able to block. A good Talent.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Three
- Last Stand--The cool down has been reduced to 6 min. Last Stand is an excellent panic button and always will be.
- Improved Revenge--Now increases damage by 10% and gives a 25% chance to stun for 3 seconds. Two ranks to 20% and 50%. A good damage increase to an excellent ability.
- Shield Mastery--Increases your Block value by 15% and reduces the cool down on Shield Block by 10 seconds. Two ranks to 30% and 20 seconds. Based on this Talent, it appears that the Shield Block ability has undergone some major alterations.
- Toughness--Now in Tier Three. In additon to its old armor improving ability, now reduces the duration of slowing effects by 6%. Five ranks to 30%.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Four
- Improved Spell Reflection--Reduces the chance that you will be hit by spells by 2%, and when ability is used will reflect the first spell cast against the two nearest party members.
- Improved Disarm--Increases all damage taken by the victim of this ability by 5% and reduces cool down by 10 seconds. Two ranks to 10% and 20 seconds.
- Puncture--Formerly Improved Sunder Armor.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Five
- Improved Disciplines--Now in Protection Tree. Reduces cool down of your Shield Wall, Retaliation, and Recklessness abilities by 30 seconds. Two ranks to 60 seconds. There are better places in this Talent Tree to use points.
- Concussion Blow--Now deals 142 damage based on attack power as well as stunning for 5 seconds. This is the prerequisite for the new Talent, Vigilance.
- Gag Order--Shield Bash and Heroic Throw (new ability) have a 50% chance of silencing the target for 3 seconds. It also increases Shield Slam damage by 5%. Two ranks to 100% and 5%. Heroic Throw is the new level 80 ability, a long range attack. Shield Slam is now an ability instead of a talent.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Six
- Shield Mastery--No longer exists. With all the other changes, no one will miss it.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Seven
- Improved Defensive Stance--While in Defensive stance all spell damage is reduced by 3% and when you Block, Parry, or Dodge, you have a 50% chance to become ¡°Enraged,¡± increasing melee damage by 5% for 12 seconds. The Enraged effect also allows access to new abilities. Two ranks to 6% and 100%.
- Vigilance--Warrior targets a raid or group member. That member gains 5% to Dodge and a 10% decrease to Threat. Any time that target is hit, the Warrior¡¯s Taunt ability is refreshed. Lasts until cancelled. Essentially a Paladin Aura for Warriors.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Eight
- Vitality--Now increases your total Strength by 2% and your Expertise by 2. Three ranks to 6% and 6 maximum. Vitality is nice to have, but does not change the flavor of the Protection Tree or add any real advantage. Some may miss the former Stamina improvement.
- Safeguard--Reduces damage taken by the target of the Warrior¡¯s Intervene ability by 15% for 6 seconds. Two ranks to 30%. A decent, but not sparkling Talent.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Nine
- Warbringer--The Warrior¡¯s Charge ability is now available any time during combat and in any stance. In addition, Charge, Intercept, and Intervene now remove all movement impairing effects.
- Critical Block--A Warrior¡¯s blocks now have a 10% chance to block twice the normal amount. It also increases your Shield Slam ability¡¯s critical hit percentage by 5%. Three ranks to 30% and 15%. All tanks should take this ability if they are interested in staying alive.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Ten
- Sword and Board--Increases critical strike of your Devastate by 5%. Also, when Devastate or Revenge deals damage it has a 10% chance of refreshing Shield Slam and reducing its cost to zero. Three ranks to 15% and 30%. A fantastic talent that will give plenty of free Shield Slams. An impressive damage dealing Talent for a tank.
- Damage Shield--All melee attacks against you take damage equal to 10% of your Block value. Two ranks to 20%. Another fantastic Talent, the Warrior can now do damage without even attacking.
Protection Talent Tree Tier Eleven
- Shockwave--Warrior stuns all enemy targets within ten yards in a frontal cone for 4 seconds and causes 142 damage (based on attack power). A good ability that will help with tanking several enemies at once. This is especially important for the Off-Tank (a secondary Warrior whose position is to stop lesser enemies). It also adds some viability to PvP.
The high tier Talents in the Protection Tier are so extraordinary, they once again make the Warrior the best front line fighter of all the classes. In addition, the damage additions make it so that the Protection Warrior can do every day leveling with out a damage dealing escort. The tank has grown some teeth.
