How to Defeat a Rogue in Battlegrounds or Arena

In World of Warcraft's player vs. player (PvP) combat, Rogues are one of the most lethal classes. They deal massive amounts of damage, and they can easily control an enemy¡¯s movements with their stun abilities. Yet, if a player can anticipate the Rogue¡¯s moves, the Rogue becomes little more than a fly buzzing around the Warrior's Plate-covered self.

The Matchup: PvP Warrior versus Rogue

A Warrior has a few disadvantages against the Rogue-- mostly their lack of ranged attacks and healing abilities-- but they generally match up well. A player should keep these two advantages in mind when playing.

  • Damage

Rogues rely on combinations of moves to do damage. Warriors rely on nothing other than strength of arms. Every time a Warrior attacks, he does a significant amount of damage, plus he builds Rage for special attacks.

  • Time

The longer a fight goes, the more Rage a Warrior builds. Rogues lose Energy as a fight goes on, and will most likely have to escape if a fight goes too long. It takes a Rogue quite a bit of time to chip down your armor. A Warrior simply has to keep calm, counter the Rogue¡¯s moves and wait him out.

The Rogue¡¯s Battle Plan

In order for the Rogue to have a chance against a Warrior, he must surprise and stun lock him. A Warrior should expect a Cheap Shot, followed by a Kidney Shot. The rogue might open with a Sap, but that is generally wasteful for him unless he needs time to heal or regain energy.

From there the Rogue will dance around and use combo moves and finishers on the stunned Warrior, waiting for him to foolishly use his PvP Trinket to escape the stun. When the Warrior does that, the Rogue will use Blind, restealth, and repeat the whole ugly process. The Warrior will be helpless and look very stupid as the Rogue kills him. He should expect the Rogue to laugh as he does this. The Warrior deserves it.

The Warrior¡¯s Battle Plan

The first step for the Warrior is anticipation. If he see a Rogue near him going into stealth, the Warrior should expect an imminent attack. The best defense is to quickly switch to Berserker Stance and use Demoralizing Shout. If the Rogue is hit with Demoralizing Shout, it will break his stealth.

If the Rogue stuns the Warrior, he should check to see which attack he used. Only use Berserker Rage to escape it if he used a Kidney Shot or Cheap Shot. With those two stuns, the Rogue can keep attacking you. With the others, any attack will break the stun.

Now it is the Warrior¡¯s turn to take the advantage. He should stay in Berserker Stance unless he has already used Berserker Rage. If so, then he should switch to Battle Stance and use Rend. The Damage over Time from Rend will make it difficult for the Rogue to restealth.

Now the Warrior should attack him normally, remembering to move around as so many of the Rogue¡¯s attacks rely on positioning. The Rogue will Dodge often, so keeping Overpower ready is a good idea. He may panic and use Evasion, which increases his Dodge by 50%, meaning that just about every one of the Warrior's attacks will be Dodged. If he does this the Warrior should slip into Defensive Stance and use Shield Block until Evasion runs out. Remember, the longer a fight goes, the better a Warrior¡¯s odds are.

Inevitably the Rogue will try to use Blind and either run away or restealth. This is why the Warrior saved his PvP Trinket. He should use the Trinket and quickly Intercept the Rogue. The Warrior should attack him or use Concussion Blow if he has that Talent Build. When his Health is low enough, he should use Execute to finish him before the Rogue uses Cheat Death. If he uses Cheat Death, the Warrior can only hold on and whittle him down. His defeat is almost a given, he is just buying time.

Try It Out

Once the Warrior has broken a Rogue¡¯s battle plan, he is at a serious disadvantage. The Warrior's powerful attacks should make short work of him. The key is to keep calm and manage stun-breaking abilities well. Remember to laugh at him as he dies. You can be sure that is what he wanted to do.
